Dale entered the U.S. Army at seventeen and served eight years, including service as an infantry officer with the Rangers. He was airborne-qualified. After the Army, he joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, continuing a career in public service before entering the legal profession.
His legal work has included researching and drafting officer-involved shooting opinions, with attention to constitutional rights, the use of force, and civil rights.
